It was 8PM, raining heavily still as Charlie waited for her father to sit down and eat supper at the dining room table. Her whole day had been a complete and utter shock when she found out her new English and theatrical electives teacher was her adoptive father Adam Lamberton and she desperately wanted to tell her father Josh about it but doesn't know how he will react to the news. Charlie looked over at her Aunt Janice who was sitting across from the table, thankful that Janice was present to tell the news about Adam.
"So, Aunt Janice. Are we going to my dad about Adam?"
"Um? I don't know. We can wait a while?"
"Huh, for how long?"
"Hmm, four years."
"I'd graduate by then."
"Exactly!" Janice exclaimed as she took a big swill of her sangria. Josh walked in rushingly and sat down at the head of the table with his knife and fork in hand, ready to eat the meal that was in front of him. He was about to cut into his steak when he saw the worried looks on his sister and daughter's face, "What's wrong?"
"Um, nothing much really. Aunt Janice and I were just talking about our new English teacher. Yeah he is a great teacher, he used to live in Bangor, Maine."
"Oh I travel all the time to Bangor, it's such a lovely city, tell me his name maybe I have met him?" Josh asked while he was chewing on his steak.
"Dad."
"What?"
"No, it's DAD. My teacher is Mr. Adam Lamberton! Your ex- partner. "
Josh looked over at his sister who was squirming uneasily in her chair, "Is this true?" Taking another gulp of her sangria Janice replied, "YES."
"You know I was never the same when Adam left!"
"It was your own damn fault Josh. You are the one who cheated on him with that fireman, Brad or whatever his name was. What did you expect Josh? He wasn't going to stand for that and he didn't want to put Charlie in the middle of your crap so he left to spare Charlie the trauma of watching you two fight." Janice proclaimed as she was refilling her wine glass.
"He still left, he didn't even say goodbye to Charlie!"
"Yes he did," Charlie said as she was tossing her salad around with her fork, "He came into my room while we were still living in that small apartment in Manhattan."
FADE TO BLACK
Three years ago in Manhattan, New York. Adam quietly walked in to young Charlie's room and whispered, "Charlie, Charlie?"
"I'm sleeping. Go away," yawned Charlie as she turned over to go back to sleep.
"Charlotte Elizabeth I'm serious wake up."
"What is it?" Charlie asked as she was rubbing her eyes to stay awake.
"I have to leave."
"Why? Where are you going?"
"Um. Maine. I have a new teaching job there," Adam replied.
"But you have a job here," Charlie said as she pushed herself up on to her pillows.
"No I don't work at my school anymore. But you know I'll write letters to you and message you on Facebook whenever I can."
"But I don't want you to go! DId I do something bad?" Charlie asked as she was starting to cry.
Adam who noticed the tears coming down her poor little face and wiping them away said, "No, it wasn't you and don't you ever think that again. Ok. It's not you, it was your father, he did a very stupid thing that I just can not ever forgive him for."
"What did dad do?"
"Ask your Aunt Janice tomorrow, she'll tell you everything. Your old enough to know the truth."
"Don't forget me," Charlie cried as she was holding on to Adam, hugging him for dear life.
"Nah. That'll never happen you are my little girl. Now go back to sleep, oh and before I forget, here it's the necklace I wear everyday. One day I will come back for it, you'll see."
"Oh, thank you. But I just can't go back to sleep now," Charlie said as she was looking at the necklace.
"Charlie look at me," Adam said as his blue eyes were shining bright in the darkness of the bedroom. "When I count to three you will go to sleep and dream of all the great moments you and I have shared together. When I snap my fingers on the count of three you will fall into a deep sleep. One. Two. Three," snapped Adam's fingers. Carefully he put Charlie under the covers and kissed her goodnight.
"Goodnight Charlie. I love you. I'll miss you," Adam cried as he jumped out of the window and onto his new life in Maine.
FADE TO BLACK
It was 12 Noon and the lunch bell had rung. Adam put away all of his papers and headed to the cafeteria. Waiting on the lunch line he saw Charlie and Trix who were both waving at him, so he waved right back. As he went to sit down at one of the teacher's tables he saw Charlie jump in the corner of his eye, looking at her she was miming for him to open his book, which was "Fifty Shades of Gray." He looked down and found a note, he read allowed quietly, "JUST SO YOU KNOW JOSH KNOWS YOU'RE IN TOWN. SURPRISE!"
Adam looked over at Charlie and her friend who were giving two thumbs up with cheeky smiles, "Does he look upset? Look at him, does he look upset? I think he looks upset?"
"Nah, Mr. Lamberton is reading his book. I guess it didn't bother him that much?"
"If that asshole calls me I will not pick up!" Growled Adam quietly as to not let the other teachers hear his rant. Adam was about to read his book when a shadow blocked his light.
"Hi there. I'm Maxine. You must be the new English teacher. I'm the history teacher and softball coach. What else do you teach?"
"Drama and music."
"Wow I man of many talents, you must be a fantastic singer. Anyway are you single?"
"Is this woman serious, she can tell right?" Adam asked himself in his mind.
"I was new last year and I was wondering if we could go out on a date? I'm sorry was that forward of me?"
"Yes, hasn't anyone told you?"
"Told me what," Maxine asked, not having a clue about Adam's 'preference'.
"That I'm gay. As in I like men," Adam replied gently.
"Oh well. I guess I'm just gonna have to change your mind," Maxine was about to go in for a kiss when Adam leapt up from his seat and walked all the way to the other side of the cafeteria. He sat down next to Janice when he said, " Oh my god. You have no idea what just happened to me?!"
"What?" Janice said excitedly.
"That woman who's sitting at my seat just asked me out on a date. Poor thing she didn't have a clue that I was gay, so then I told her and she took that as a challenge."
"Hahahahahahaha. Oh man I'm sorry. This happened to the Science teacher last year, Maxine followed him around like a lovesick puppy. It got so bad that he had to quit. Dude your screwed, she is a stalker. She has never been caught but I can guarantee you, she will follow you."
"Well isn't that just peachy. It's only my second day and I already have a stalker."
FADE TO BLACK
Four hours had passed and Adam was about to step into his car when he heard a noise, "Who's there?" Adam closed his eyes and listened for the sound of a heartbeat. Nothing. So he got into the car and drove away.
As Adam was getting out of his car and walking to the front of the Sidney Apartments Building he heard a twig snap. So he decided to walk over to the side of the building where the back alley was. This time he had heard a heartbeat so he drew out his fingernails like a cat and climbed up the building. It got dark fairly quick due to the city's rainy weather. As he looked down he saw Maxine running into the alley, "I can't believe she followed me."
"Note to self: Go Hunting in the Woods."
Adam jumped down and lightly landed on his feet and was standing right behind Maxine. Maxine who was shaking her head, turned around and screamed, "Where did you come from?"
"I'm not the one who 'follows' people to their homes?"
"Your daughter Charlie left her purse in my class, she's in 7th period History with me," Maxine explained.
"I haven't even told Mr. Levinson who Charlie is to me. How did you find out?"
"I overheard your daughter and her friend talking about it in the girls bathroom," replied Maxine.
"Why were you in the girls bathroom?"
"The Teachers bathroom was occupied," Maxine said.
Adam took the purse out of Maxine's hands and looked for a wallet. It was indeed Charlie's. Looking into Maxine's eyes he chanted, "When I count to three you will go to Pizzahut for dinner and drive home. When I snap my fingers you will do what I say. One. Two. Three." Maxine opened up her eyes, got into her car and began to drive to Pizzahut.
FADE TO BLACK
It was 1AM and Adam was desperately looking for blood to drink. Adam was starving the whole damn day. He threw up his meal after 10 minutes, Vampires can't hold in regular meals for long. He closed his eyes and started listening to all of the tenants minds, looking for the right person. It was 80 year old Mr. Wellman who was dying of Leukemia. Adam flew up to Mr. Wellman's fire-escape and knocked on the window, "Hi, Mr. Wellman. Can you let me in? I left my keys in my apartment and I need to call the landlord."
The old man limped over to the window to open it up and said, "Sure, come on in but don't you have a cellphone?"
"Yes. But unfortunately it died on me."
As Adam was looking at Mr. Wellman taking his medication he asked, "You know I can help you if you want?"
"Help me with what?"
"Help you end your life. I know you want to give your daughter your life insurance money."
"How did you...."
"I saw into your mind," Adam replied as he cut Mr. Wellman's sentence short.
"But how could you..." Mr. Wellman saw Adam lift up his head and was oddly amazed at what he saw, "Your a Vampire? I bet you have your keys on you as well don't you?"
Adam shook his head in agreement, "Why would you want to do that for me? Besides the obvious reason?"
"Because I knew you were going to kill yourself but you stopped when you knew the insurance wouldn't pay out if you had jumped out that window. If I did it, your daughter would get the money to take care of her children."
"Will it hurt?"
"Only at first. You wont feel anything after a while. I don't harm people unless they are dying or are at the brink of death, that's one of my rules in life." Adam said as he was going into the kitchen to dump out the gallon of milk into the sink, " I hope you don't mind. I don't want to kill another person for a long while when I am done."
"It's okay I don't want you too either. How will you cover this up?"
"Luckily I found a man in this building who killed three people in a home invasion while I was searching for 'dinner', no offense. The man was never caught, so I can just pin this on him."
"Oh My God. What's his name?"
"Uh, Bietlemeyer. He lives two doors away from you," Adam replied.
"I have been living next door to a killer this whole time. Who did he kill?"
"A father, mother, and a two year old little boy. He was high on meth. That's what happens when you do drugs. You do crazy shit."
Adam walked Mr. Wellman over to the middle of the living room and asked, "Are you ready?" The old man shook his head yes. Then Adam sank his teeth into Wellman's neck and he gently sucked the blood out of him. As he laid the old man on his back he stuck a straw into the man's neck, pouring the blood into the empty gallon of milk. After it was halfway full he let the rest of the blood seep onto the wooden floor and with a knife Adam made an incision where his teeth marks were.
Knocking on Bietlemeyer's door he said in a deep voice, "This is the landlord. Can you let me in? Open up!" Bietlemeyer went to open and said, "Ok." He sees that it was not the landlord but by that time it was too late, Adam had stormed in and covered the man's mouth so he wouldn't scream, "You know it's not nice to kill children," Adam whispered as he knocked the man out with his 'Vulcan Death Grip'. He carried the man's limp body over to Wellman's apartment in a flash. As he was controlling Bietlemeyer's unconscious body, Adam started to knock over the old man's belongings and put the knife into Bietlemeyer's hands.
As he woke the young man up, he covered the man's mouth once more and with his eyes shining bright he said, "You killed old man Wellman. You wanted his medication and when he didn't give it to you, you got a knife and stabbed him in the neck. When the cops come for you, you will try to get away when they wake you up but you will fail and tell them that you killed old man Wellman for his medication. You warned him and he didn't listen. Now go back to sleep." The young man went back to sleep and Adam took his hand off of the man's mouth, "Ugh. He licked me! Gross!"
Dialing 911 he spoke to the officer and yelled in an old man voice, "Help me please!" Then quickly hung up the phone and ran to his apartment. Sitting down to drink a glass of blood he lifted his glass as he looked up to the heavens, "Here's to you Mr. Wellman. Rest in Peace."
